You’ll go high up into the Rif Mountains to Chefchaouen, a town with a beautiful walled medina, and originally a Berber station, on this 7-hour trip from Tangier.
The main square is the centre of Chefchaouen and has a kasbah, a central mosque and cafés with authentic Moroccan menus founded in the 18th century. A combination of traditional Moroccan products and souvenirs, with some excellent bargains, is sold by the busy sector.
It is quick to visit the town itself. Founded by Moulay Ismail, the kasbah is now basically a ruin and the great mosque is situated next to it. You’ll find souks selling a range of products, even if the old medina is thin.
If you go behind the jewellery souk to the Jewish quarter, you’ll get a sense of the style disparity between it and the main Arab region.
